In Faces da Floresta, Valdir Cruz, a Brazilian photographer resident in the US, documented the life of the indigenous population of the Amazon rainforest, for which he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1996.

Cruz’s work looked at the Brazilian people, architecture and landscape. Faces da Floresta was a photographic account of his expeditions into the Amazon rainforest, and in particular an investigation into Yanomami culture. The exhibition alternated grandiose panoramic views with portraits of tribal people, and depicted the reality and problems they face.
